What kind of preventive care do you offer?

The American Dental Association recommends a trip to the dentist every six months—and at our Green Village, NJ dental office, we concur. Examinations on a regular basis give our dentist the opportunity to examine the teeth, gums, and soft tissues of the mouth. Cleanings twice a year help keep cavity- and infection-causing plaque from taking up residence on your teeth. We can also examine the health of your gums, ensuring there is no asymptomatic infection lurking.

We usually recommend a full set of digital x-rays once each year. Digital x-rays are an important diagnostic tool that enable your dentist to discover dental issues that lurk below the surface.

We also offer critical oral cancer screenings, so if any abnormalities are spotted, you can get them treated as soon as possible.

Why do I need to see the dentist if I am not having any problems?

In dentistry, preventive care is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. When you make time for biannual examinations and cleanings at our dental office, you can often save time in the long run. These visits are the best way for your dentist to discover dental problems while they are still small—and treatment is generally quicker, cheaper, and less invasive.

If you wait until something hurts before you come to our practice, it might mean more extensive treatment.

For example, tooth decay usually starts as a minuscule spot on your tooth—too small for you to notice. But a dental examination with x-rays would spot it. Your dentist may recommend a dental filling, and you don’t have to give it another thought.

But if you skip routine dental exams, you provide that tiny speck of decay with a window of opportunity to grow. It might even start to hurt when it gets big enough. If you ignore the pain, which at this point is probably tolerable, you might develop a much worse toothache as an infection forms in your tooth root. An emergency dental appointment at our dental office could reveal that you need a root canal.

In our example, not visiting the dentist regularly for an examination meant that what could have been a quick filling turned into a root canal and a tooth that needed a dental crown.

Don’t let this happen to you. Visit us every six months so we can stop small problems from becoming large issues.

What should I know about gum disease?

Gum disease is the main reason for tooth loss among American adults. Many people in this country develop gum disease, but a large number of these people are unaware that they have it. In its early stages, gum disease often presents with no symptoms at all. Only your dentist can tell you whether it is present.

In many cases, the only way to know for sure if you have gum disease is to visit your dentist. When you come to Vaccaro Aesthetic and Family Dentistry for routine examinations, Dr. Vaccaro and his team will carefully asses the health of your gums.

If you have bleeding in our mouth when you brush or floss, this is one indicator that you could have gum disease. Other signs and symptoms can develop as the disease becomes more advanced:

When gum disease is more advanced, it cannot be cured, but it can be managed. You’ll need to have deep cleanings at the dentist every few months to help keep the disease from worsening. In the most advanced cases of gum disease, you might need a surgical procedure to clear up the infection.

Stay current with routine dental checkups at our dental office to help keep both your teeth and your gums healthy.
