There are plenty of reasons you might need a dental crown. One of the most common is to strengthen a back molar that previously had a very large filling in it. Over time, fillings—especially metal, amalgam fillings—start to pull away from the tooth, meaning they are no longer effectively protecting the tooth from bacteria and decay. They can also cause the tooth to develop fractures.
Purposes of Dental Crowns
With a particularly large filling in the tooth, much of the original tooth structure has been drilled away. Often there is not enough left to put in another filling. In this situation, a dental crown is the best option. A crown is a tooth cover—or “cap”—that fits over a prepared tooth, making it strong and protecting it against bacteria and decay.
Another common use for a dental crown is to cover a tooth that has undergone a root canal. Because a root canal removes the living tissue of a tooth, the tooth becomes brittle afterward. Placing a crown over the tooth restores its strength and function.
We often use dental crowns for cosmetic purposes, covering up a tooth that is misshapen or stained.
